How To Repair Ethereal Items On Diablo 2
This does NOT convert the item to the Exceptional Unique version of the Unique Item. Unique item bonuses remain the same; only the item it's based on is upgraded. This can be used to upgrade Ethereal Items also. They will continue to be Ethereal after they are upgraded. Also if the item is socketed, then jewels or runes and their mods will also.
Crafted Items are items made with the Horadric Cube.
By using the Horadric Cube's ability to transmute items, a player can use certain recipes to essentially create a Rare Item; only with certain preset mods along with the random prefixes and suffixes.
- You can socket a normal ethereal item, and it will remain ethereal, and gain sockets just as a non-ethereal item would. In Diablo 2 version 1.11 and 1.11b, there is a bug regarding the socketing of ethereal armors and shields. Ethereal armors and shields are assigned a 50% bonus to their base defense rating when dropped.
- Ethereal items cannot be repaired by NPCs. Some items repair themselves over time. In Diablo II, repairing is the means by which typically costly spell charges are restored to equipment. A Ral and an armor piece combined in the Horadric Cube will result in the armor being repaired. Orts can be similarly used to repair weapons.
They appear differently from all other items, showing up with orange text rather than yellow or gold like Rare and Unique Items. Like Rune Words, Crafted Items abide to certain rules that can sometimes be confusing and counter intuitive. Although they may appear tedious to make, Crafted Items have the potential to be extremely powerful, and more valuable than even Unique Items.

Crafting Basics
All crafted items are made with Magic Items as the base items, and a variety of other items (most often perfect Gems, Jewels of any kind, and specified Runes). Any magical item can be used, including Ethereal Items, or items socketed due to a magical prefix such as Mechanic's. However, after the crafted item is made, the ethereal or socketed condition would be gone, as crafting an item gets rid of any preexisting mods. This is important to remember: magical items with mods that are desired by a player should not be crafted, as crafting them erases them.
Mods
How To Repair Ethereal Items On Diablo 2 3
A crafted item always has a set of pre-determined mods that depends on the recipe used in its crafting and the type of item that is crafted. There are four types of basic recipes that correspond to four types of pre-set mods:
Along with these pre-set mods, a crafted item is also imbued with a set of random mods: 1-4 prefixes or suffixes that would normally be found on magic items or rare items. Higher character levels and item levels spawn higher numbers of mods, as well as higher level mods. For instance, crafting a Dimensional Shard at level 81 would spawn 4 higher level random mods, as opposed to crafting a Jared's Stone at level 20, which would most likely spawn 1 lower level mod. Crafted Items can also have very high character level requirements, sometimes even over level 100, making them unusable.
You can determine your chances of getting between 1 and 4 affixes using the following calculation: (clvl/2)+(qlvl/2) where clvl is the level of your character when you push the transmute button on your Cube and qlvl is the quality level of the input item (refer to individual item pages to determine an item's qlvl). This formula will determine the new ilvl for your crafted item:

- ilvl 1-30: 40% chance of 1 affix; 20% chance each of 2, 3, or 4 affixes.
- ilvl 31-50: 60% chance of 2 affixes; 20% chance each of 3 or 4 affixes.
- ilvl 51-70: 80% chance of 3 affixes; 20% chance of 4 affixes.
- ilvl 71+: 100% chance of 4 affixes.
Pros and Cons
Crafted Items are different from Rare and Unique Items in that they give players leeway as to customizing their abilities. By using a certain recipe for a base, a player could theoretically continue to craft a desired item over and over again, until they find a Crafted Item with the pre-set and random mods they want. For instance, a Blood Amulet requires a magical amulet, any jewel, a perfect ruby, and an Amn rune. A player could get five amulets, perfect Rubies, jewels, and Amns, and craft five different Blood Amulets; they would all have the same range of fixed mods, and different random ones, and the player could take his or her pick out of the results.
Although Crafted Items can get mods exclusive to Unique or Set Items (such as Fire Absorb, chance of Crushing Blow, etc.), they can not get mods exclusive to Magical Items, such as Grandmaster's or Celestial.
Patch Differences
Crafted Items went through a variety of changes from Patch 1.08 to Patch 1.09, including changes in recipes. Although no differences have been made from Patch 1.09 to the current Patch 1.13, those few players not updated to the latest patch may find Crafted Item recipes quite different than those listed.
Early patches also had quite a few problems with Crafted Items: Prior to Patch 1.09, players could imbue Crafted Items with the Act I quest. However, since then, the bug has been fixed.

Item Management
Since Diablo 2 allows for a small inventory for each character, you will have to manage your items constantly. Also, you will have to figure out what items are the most expensive so you will pick them up and sell them to town vendors.
However, you can pick up every single item and return to town for selling when your inventory is full, but this will take you much more time to progress or clear areas. Note that if you leave an item for about 10-30 minutes (depending on the item’s rarity) it will disappear.
- 10 minutes: Potions, Keys, Tomes, Scrolls, Arrows and Bolts.
- 10 minutes: Any Weapon and Armor of quality lower than magic, including Ethereal and Socketed Items.
- 10 minutes: Pandemonium artifacts such as Key of Terror, Hate, and Destruction, Baal’s Eye, Mephisto’s Brain, and Diablo’s Horn. Also the Token of Absolution and the 4 flavors of Essences
- 20 minutes: Gems. Runes and Magic Items
- 30 minutes: Crafted, Rare, Set, Unique Items.
Stackable Items
You can stack some specific items on top of each other in order to fit in the same inventory slot. This way you will save some of your inventory space. Some examples are keys, throwing potions, arrows, bolts and other throwing items like knives, throwing axes and javelins.
Items’ rarity order
The order is from the rarest to the least rare items:
Unique Items > Set Items > Rare Items > Magic Items > High Quality Items > Normal Items > Low Quality Items.
Durability
Every item that you can equip has its own durability that is being lowered while you are using it in battle. When its durability drops to zero, you can’t use this item anymore, unless you repair it. In every town, there is an NPC that can repair your armor and weapons for a price. This price depends on the rarity of items. The maximum durability that an item can have is 333.
Ethereal
Most kinds of weapons and armor can appear in the Ethereal version, except Bows and Crossbows. Ethereal items appear translucent while you have them equipped or in your Inventory. In addition, they lose their durability at a slower rate in comparison with other items and they don’t lose any durability when your mercenary is equipped with them.
Ethereal weapons offer 50% more base damage and Ethereal armor provides +50% base defense. However, they have a reduced Durability and you cannot repair them. Keep in mind that you can place indestructible Zod Runes in some Ethereal items in order to prevent their destruction.
Crude, Low Quality, Cracked, Damaged items
These types of items provide fewer stats compared to their normal versions. Thus, they are useful mostly for selling them at town vendors.
Superior Weapons and Armor
Superior items offer better stats that you can see below:
- Attack Rating: +1 to +3
- Defense: +5% to +15%
- Damage: +5% to +15% or +1 to minimum damage
- Durability: +10% to +15%
Circlets
Circlets are Helms that provide Magical Suffixes and Prefixes that you would not get at a helm otherwise. Also, Circlets often have less Defense than the regular Helmets.
Class-specific Items
These items are only usable by a specific class and they offer some abilities only to that class (such as additional points to skills).
Charged Items
These magic items allow the player to use a specific skill with a limited number of uses. Some of these skills can be triggered under certain conditions such as “when attacking an enemy”.
The skills from charged items appear in the list with your normal skills, and you can set it on your right or left mouse button, just like any other skills. When you run out of charges, you can visit a Blacksmith to repair the item and recharge it.
Finding Good Items
Below there are some tips for finding more Magic, Rare, Set, and Unique Items:
- Use items that boost the Magic Finding chance
- Open up all Barrels, Chests, and Rocks: They have a good chance of dropping good items, especially if you use a decent amount of Magic Find. Also, you should always carry some keys with you for opening locked chests.
- Kill Unique Monsters and Champions. Try to always kill these type of enemies as they have a better chance of dropping good items. Don’t hesitate to farm again the areas where these monsters appear more frequently.
- Kill groups Monsters: It’s a good method to visit rooms full of monsters that you can slay quickly. The more enemies you kill in a certain amount of time, the better your chance is for finding worthy items.
- Activate Evil Urns and Monster Shrines: They will spawn Champions or Unique Monsters that have a better chance of dropping valuable items.
